Construction Terms

It is important to understand some construction terms commonly used by your contractor or your carpenter. Knowing these terms makes you familiar and oversee their work and save some cash.

Here are some familiar terms during construction:

• Anilyo – are the rebar ties used to tie together the reinforcement bars which will be poured with concrete.

• Ampao – means the honeycomb air pocketer on the surface of the concrete if it not applied correctly. They should re apply the concrete and smoothen it out properly if the flooring has ampao.

• Clebe – it is the slope of the drain on the wet areas of your house such in the bathroom or kitchen. It should have clebe in order to run water straight to the drain

• Cerrujo – the excess from the tiles, stone and other architectural finishes and materials.

• Gabay – the term use for railing and balustrade of the stairs.

• Hulog or Nasa Hulog – If the walls are aligned vertically. Carpenters can use a level bar and plum to check if the walls are aligned or nasa hulog.

• Kamada – the piling of materials in a palette to keep the materials organized on-site.

• Kapak – If the tile adhesive and cement were not applied correctly during the installation of tiles or granite, there will be the hollow sound that you hear. The tiles or granite should be re-install again. The cause of being kapak is that there are air pockets underneath the tiles. You can check if the tiles or granite is kapak by tapping the corner and middle part of the tile with a coin.

• Kanto-Mesa – it is a milter joint. A miter joint is formed if two pieces of wood or other material is cut to an angle of 90° and the line of junction bisects this angle, forming a corner or kanto.

• Masilya – a putty used to fill the holes and cracks of a surface to ensure a smooth finish

• Medya – means a half-inch, a half foot or 0.5.

• Palitada – also means plastering of wall or skim coating.

• Plantilla – is a pattern for cutting. This term is usually used by furniture manufacturers.

• Porma or Formwork – a phenolic plyboard used to mold concrete structural beams and posts. These plyboards serve as temporary wooden substructure until the concrete dries.

• Punsol – is the nailhead of the common carpenter’s nail.

• Risalte is the unevenness of the surface when it’s supposed to be flushed and even.

• Rodelang Bakal is a metal trowel used for finishing on the walls. It is also used to smoothen the applied plaster.

• Salansanin – used this term to put everything in order or in-place.

• Tambol – is a board-up or false wall to cover deficiencies of the application. It can be used to hide the mechanical, plumbing and electrical pipes on the soffit.

• Tansi – the nylon used to make sure that the wall and architectural finishes such as tiles, granite and cladding are properly installed and aligned.
